CyberGhost VPN, now with OpenVPN

You’re using Mac OS X, Linux or smartphone with an internet access and the fact that CyberGhost would not run on those always annoyed you? Well we have just the thing: From now on you can connect to CyberGhost VPN using the native OpenVPN client, and surf anonymously with Linux & Co.

Login to you account, head to account management and click on the “OpenVPN configuration” button, this section contains a download of your personalized login-files which include the configuration file for OpenVPN0 and the certificates. Please be aware that the OpenVPN login is in a test phase at the moment.

Supported operating systems and devices

We are currently offering configuration files for Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and Android. They are being created as soon as you choose an option and can be used immediately on the selected device or operating system.

Windows, Linux & Mac OS X

Windows enthusiasts, who would like to use CyberGhost with OpenVPN directly, can do so be going to the OpenVPN project website and downloading the setup file for Windows installation.

Linux fans have to stick to their respective repositories corresponding to their distribution or manually installing the setup by following the aforementioned URL.

Mac OS X installation can be a bit tricky if you would like to compile OpenVPN using the source code, if you are not so sure about that, we suggest you simply go with already implemented solutions like Tunnelblick. You will only have to copy the configuration files to the program folder before you initiate a connection with the CyberGhost servers.

Android

Installing OpenVPN on Android without any background knowledge can get quite difficult, although Android does support VPN; OpenVPN itself is unfortunately not among them. To install you will first need a modified version of Android (also known as Mod) as well as administrative privileges (root access).

To summarize it: yes, it is possible to get CyberGhost running with OpenVPN using Android, but we cannot provide you with a manual on how to modify your device. Still, a substantial number of forums dedicate itself to rooting and modifying Android devices, one of the largest being xda-developers, which can give you all the info you require.

As soon as you have root access on your phone, you can use the application called “OpenVPN Installer” to (as the name already says) install OpenVPN on your device. After that simply copy the configuration files you’ve downloaded from the account management to you device and you can connect to CyberGhost from “OpenVPN Settings”.

You can help out!

The installation on particular devices is not always as easy as it seems. But we do not want every user to reinvent the wheel for himself, this is why we urge our community to create tutorials for installing OpenVPN on their devices or operating systems (or operating systems variations). As a little thank you we will post the tutorial under you name, and you will get a three month Premium-Plus access with a traffic flat rate, 20 GB of encrypted storage on CyberGhost’s DataSafe and access to all our servers.

But there are some conditions: the device must successfully connect to CyberGhost using OpenVPN and all the steps must be described in detail with pictures. If we receive more than one tutorial for the same device or operating system, we will decide on whichever one is the best, or in a case of similar quality we will simply draw the winner.

If you would like to participate, send us your tutorials to openvpn-tut@cyberghostvpn.com. You should include the tutorial (PDF, Word, HTML) and all the pictures (BMP, PNG, JPEG).

The winners will be announced here and also included in our Online-Help.

Right on time for CeBIT: The all new CyberGhost

This year’s CeBIT takes place from the 1st until the 5th of March in Hannover, Germany, simultaneously to this event, we at CyberGhost are proud to announce the next round. Not only has our Website been redesigned from head to toe, we are also introducing a new and easy pay scale.  The new version 4.7 version of the client is available as of right now as a public beta version and can be accessed using the standard account.

The new client in the 4.7 version

The design of the software has been redone, we have also modified the client to our new rate structure. A server-map now shows the locations of the servers and if desired- the users location (before the anonymization process). The AntiSpy module now has a built in trace-eraser. Using the ComputerBild-LoginCard (OWOK) & Card-reader, which some ComputerBild reader should own, a convenient CyberGhost login is now available, in the client itself and in the next few day on our website also. The client is now available in the course of a public beta test. The old client can still be used until the end of the beta-phase, however the new tariff structure is now implemented there and the client would not allow a connection after the traffic has ran out.

New rates

CyberGhost has undergone a massive development throughout the last few years, the server-structure and services have been improved constantly. This lead to persistent changes of the rate-structure. With this full-blown remodeling of the latter we would like to make CyberGhost much easier and more attractive for you.

  • The absolutely free of charge free tariff.
  • Paid tariffs now have a traffic flat rate, however the bandwidth is being reduced after a certain traffic limit which depends on the tariff.
  • There is a new offer called “Classic VPN” designed as a starter package, which starts at €4.17 monthly.
  • Paid accounts contain all of our servers (currently Germany, USA, Switzerland, Ukraine and the Netherlands, which more to come, also included of course).
  • The online storage can now vary between 2,10 and 20 GB
  • You can find all the details by visiting http://cyberghostvpn.com/en/product/purchase.html the rates are available starting now
  • Please notice that the old client does not support the traffic flat rate, if you use up all of your traffic, you will need to switch to the 4.7 version

Transition of existing accounts

All super-premium subscribers will automatically be switched to “Premium” tariffs and will profit not only from the new flat rate, but will also receive 8 GB more of online storage for free. “Premium-DE” and “Premium-US” subscribers can use the account management to switch to the Premium tariff for a one time fee of € 6.99.

Please notice: While not reaching the traffic limit of 20, 40 or 80 GB the bandwidth will not be limited, but may vary depending on the workload of the server. After the included traffic is used up, the bandwidth will be limited to 512 kbits/s. The traffic amount can be boosted by a purchase of a traffic upgrade.

CyberGhost server Musca sets some new rules

Right on time for Christmas we present you with a new feature in the fight against the state and internet-sniffers. Our new test-server Musca can’t wait for you to go all the way with it, figuratively of course.

All premium users can knock themselves out and download without a traffic limit. Why you ask?

We are developing a new traffic flatrate here at CyberGhost VPN, which means the usual 40 GB limit will be forgotten. The only downer right now is the bandwidth per user, since we cannot offer a bandwidth flatrate with our traffic flatrate.
