How we unblocked Twitter in Turkey

First, I will try to outline the current situation in Turkey so you can realize why we felt that we needed to do something and donate 30.000 free Premium licenses to help Turkish people.

Turkey has a long tradition of censorship that reached a peak again last week with the ban on Twitter, blocking March 22 by blocking access to the Google public DNS service and than the ban on YouTube.

The actions of the Turkish Prime Minister made the international community react furiously, especially since Turkey has previously banned YouTube after videos insulting Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, Turkey’s founder, were shared on the site.

The shocking declarations of the Prime Minister after all this were: “I don’t care at all. Everyone will see how powerful the state of the Republic of Turkey is.”

Twitter is seen as a enemy of the nation by the Turkish authorities since protestors used to organize movements across the country and spread uncensored anti-government opinions through Twitter in the past year.

The Twitter outrage started a bit earlier, in February, when the Turkish parliament approved a new internet law that allows the government to close websites without permission from the courts.

For more details, we invite you to watch our new Red Couch YouTube show to learn more about the Turkey’s War Against the Free Internet.

So, in order to bypass cyber censorship, internet users from Turkey had to go to our special website and enter your e-mail address in the empty field. After that we sent them an e-mail with the serial key and they can activate their license within 30 days! Of course, they can also use our free service to access blocked websites.

All the 30.000 free licenses were gone fast and right now people can Tweet again in Turkey. You can get the full picture of our campaign from our infographic.
